Rating: 4.9/5 Stars
I loved it. I loved it so much. I literally cannot believe this is the debut novel for this author. It was so unbelievably well written and captivating. The storyline hooked me from the very beginning, and I loved Vivian and Hugh as much as I loved Margot and Leo. Typically, when a book goes back and forth between past and present, I prefer one story over the other, but this was absolutely not the case. I thoroughly enjoyed how the sections were split into the tapes, and how each one picked up right where the last left off. I adored Hugh from minute one and he was obviously end game, but I couldn’t believe how the author made me love Kit Pierce as well! He had his demons, but it was so clear how much he loved Vivian too. When he said he just loved alcohol more, my heart broke for him because you know he would have given anything for things to be different. I usually rave about the male main characters (which Hugh is no exception), but holy cow, Vivian Stone was perfection. She was resilient, brave, ridiculously witty, levelheaded, and so much more. It has been a while since I enjoyed a female main character as much as I enjoyed Vivian, and I miss her already! The ONLY reason I didn’t give it a 5 star is because after the buildup through the whole book of Vivian and Hugh, I was dying to get a little more glimpse into the life they created together, or even when he finally asked Vivian to be his wife. This book was so great, and I can’t wait to see what else this author comes out with!
