Alice joins “The Doe Pages” an online forum that helps find missing persons and while scrolling through the site Alice recognizes a face. She is shocked to realize that it is her childhood kidnapper. This sends Alice on a hunt for this man, with some help from other amateur sleuths from The Doe Pages.
Alice then comes into contact with Merrily Cruz, who is also searching for the same man but under different circumstances (he is a missing love one). So is this man good or bad? The Lucky One by Lori Rader-Day is a psychological thriller where two women are trying to find the truth; however, this truth may not only destroy everything their lives were built on but may even cost them their lives.
Overall, I enjoyed this book, it was a quick read keeping the reader on their toes, unsure where the story was going or what the outcome would be. This was a unique take on a kidnapping story that made the reader question whether we really know our own stories or are our lives built on lies that we are fed. This book wasn’t a straight thriller but instead was more of a psychological story of how a childhood trauma could affect life decisions, emotions, and beliefs, but also the harsh reality when you realize the only memories you’ve ever known have been built on a lie.
It was hard to tell who the good guys/bad guys were in this story. Even at the end I was left wondering who all were in the wrong and right. I felt that this story was slow in spots but once the truth was known it was rushed and left me wanting more answers, more closure, and more understanding. I felt as the reader, you know something just isn’t right but you can’t pinpoint what or who is wrong, leaving you to question who you can really trust.
Is anyone good? When that question is answered the reader is left trying to understand why and how this even occurred. Though this very likely is what Lori Rader-Day wanted so the reader would relate to the main characters. I would recommend this book to be read and give it a 4/5 stars.
