Lili Lowe had her dream job as assistant to career politician, Teddy Landen. Lili had not intended to wreck Teddy’s 15-year marriage and blow up his career, but when the paparazzi interrupts their sexual dalliance in the back of Teddys’ car, Lilli’s life goes off the rails. Enter stage left, momager, Lydia Lowe. Lydia single handedly raised her four girls to chase their dreams and let nothing stop them in the process. She steps in to help Lili recover from the media nightmare that has ensued after her affair with Teddy is exposed. Lydia masterminds a plan to land Lili back on her feet, literally. Lili’s three sisters, Stevie, Iris and Kate are inadvertently drawn into a carefully orchestrated soap opera, as Lydia brokers a deal to film a reality show featuring all of them coping with the scandal. Each of the sisters is affected by the heightened attention, and not in a good way. Sometimes beauty, wealth, and influence don’t always ensure happiness or, does it?
The Lowe Job imparts valuable social commentary on double standards, while exploring sexual autonomy, the complex bond between mother and daughters, and the voyeuristic media culture. I enjoyed this decadent, contemporary, Monica Lewinsky style romp of political and social upheaval. Lili and her sister, along with their uncompromising mother, exemplify resilient girl power that would make even the Kardashians proud.
Grace Alexander presents her debut novel with sharp, witty banter, interesting plot twists and unforgettable characters. The Lowe Job would make an excellent book club selection!
