Romantasy has very quickly become my favorite genre. It began with A Court of Thorns and Roses and now I feel like books within this subgenre are everywhere! (No complaints from me lol). There is something about this genre-likely the perfect blend of romance, often enemies-lovers, and fantasy that always feels like a win to me. The Hurricane Wars by Thea Guanzon is no exception and falls perfectly into this genre. This was a fantastic start to a new series and I found myself pulled in and wanting more when I was finished!
For all of Talasyn’s life, she has known war and suffering. Seemingly abandoned by her family, she has had to be tough to survive both as an orphan and living under constant fear of The Night Emperor’s forces. But Talasyn is not completely helpless as she has a secret that she has been keeping from those close to her. She is a Lightweaver and magic flows in her that is a risk to the Night Empire’s shadow magic, which makes her a target. Prince Alaric, son of the Night Emperor, has also only known war and his father has made it clear that he must clear the world of all threats to them and their rule. After trying to kill the Lightweaver, Alaric and Talasyn create a force that they don’t understand and has never been seen before. When a twist of fate happens and Talasyn learns more about her past, it will come down to her and Alaric to save the world from an even bigger threat. But will these sworn enemies be able to set their history aside and work together?
Enemies-to-lovers! Romantasy! This book has all the tropes I love, so naturally this was a very enjoyable read for me! The only reason this book did not receive 5 stars from me is that I felt there was such a large amount of world building that I found myself getting lost in the detail. I would have benefited, I think, from a map or a guide of places within this world. However, that may have very much been a “me problem”, as I like to say in these reviews, as overall this was a great story and I look forward to the next in the series…especially with that cliffhanger! Highly recommend!
