My great-grandmother used to love the show Murder She Wrote with Angela Lansbury and I can still remember watching many episodes with her after school and genuinely trying to answer the question “who done it?” I guess you could say I’ve always been a bit of a fan of a good murder mystery!
When I read the back cover of The Hunting Party by Lucy Foley, I immediately felt this would be a fantastic book solely based on the line “One of these friends is a murder. The other won’t make it out alive”. What an amazing grab for the reader to pick up this book and start immediately reading! 7 friends embark on an NYE getaway/celebration at a remote cabin in the Scottish Highlands and one, we know from the beginning of the story, has been killed. All 7 people have their own secrets they are hiding from the others and 6 of these friends are suspects.
I will be honest, it is hard to be truly surprised, in my opinion, by a truly wondering mystery nowadays. That being said, while there were some parts of The Hunting Party that I found predictable, I was definitely surprised by the way it ended and several of the twists along the way. That is why I rated this book a 4/5 because it kept me interested and surprised me at the end; everything I hope for in a good mystery. If you enjoy good suspense and you too like to know “who done it?” then pick up this book!
