I had the privilege of getting to meet Jessica Knoll as she spoke about her new novel The Favorite Sister and I am so glad I was able to hear what drew her to write this story, part of which was her shameless love of reality TV. Having read her first novel, Luckiest Girl Alive, I knew I would be in for a rollercoaster of a ride from the first page until the very last. Knoll is one of those authors that just when you really think you have the plot all figured out, she throws a huge curveball-typically not just once but three or four times per book.
If you enjoy reality TV, especially The Real Housewives, then you will LOVE this novel. Our story begins with a simple statement, “Brett is dead and I’m not innocent”. Welcome to “Goal Diggers”, a reality TV show about four women starting their own businesses and living their successful lives. Brett, Stephanie, Lauren, Jen, and Kelly are the main characters of our story and the faces of Goal Diggers. But as with all reality TV shows, there is jealousy, hatred, secrets and lies that keep these women in the public eye and essentially strangers to each other.
Reality TV is a guilty pleasure that millions partake in for a reason-it is entertaining and addicting. The Favorite Sister shows the women behind the TV who are living their lives on TV trying to keep relevant for fear of becoming irrelevant. And in true Knoll fashion, you will think you have it all figured out but I promise you, you don’t! This was a very entertaining read and would make a fantastic book club beach read for the summer! What are you waiting for?
