Imagine if Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Practical Magic had a much racier HBO version…that would be The Ex Hex. Humorous, magical, and sexy, this book had a little bit for everyone.
Nine years ago in Graves Glen, back when she was nineteen, Vivienne spent a wonderful 3-month fling with fellow witch Rhys Penhallow. Unfortunately, perfect hair Rhys was betrothed, and Vivienne furiously ended their relationship. Broken hearted, Vivienne and her cousin Gwyn broke their one rule (mixing vodka and witchcraft) and accidently placed a curse on an unsuspecting Rhys. Nine years after the curse is placed Rhys gets called on by his father to go back to Graves Glen to attend Founder’s Day in the Penhallow name and charge the ley lines which grants the town’s witches access to their witchcraft. Immediately upon entering Graves Glen the curse kicks in and everything starts to go wrong for him, car tires going flat, almost getting decapitated by a sculpture of his ancestor, you know…bad things. When a cursed Rhys goes to charge the ley lines, the whole town feels the curses effects and Vivienne and Rhys are left to find a way to uncurse the town and Rhys.
I was enthralled with this book. Like couldn’t put it down, wanted to read instead of sleep. The Ex Hex was super funny and cute with a hint of quirkiness. It is rare that I can say I loved all the characters in a book, but even the super scary father of Rhys, Simon, was enjoyable in his own super magical and stern witchy kind of way. And there is a talking cat, Sir Percival, who loves to yell “treatsssss,” which is just relatable. I’m already waiting for a sequel and a Halloween movie version of this book. Perfect romantic, witchy, and lighthearted read!
