Fern Devlin is one of those characters who may be completely insane, but you still love her anyway. The Doctor’s Widow follows The Doctor’s Wife, but it is written in such a way that it stands perfectly well on its own. However, I’m glad I read the first book to get the background on just how manipulative and delusional Fern can be. I absolutely flew through these pages, anxious to see what the next twist would bring.
Fern is now a widow after the death of her husband Drew, a respected doctor. The person who killed him, Alice, is safely incarcerated, leaving Fern free to enjoy her new single life with new clothes, a new car, and the house of her dreams. She feels completely safe—maybe even safe enough to let her guard down a bit. That is when she meets Roger. Roger is handsome and charismatic, and Fern feels she deserves some fun and love after everything she has been through. But beware: Roger may not be as perfect a catch as he seems.
As the story unfolds and they grow closer, Roger makes a comment that literally stops Fern dead in her tracks. Is it possible he knows more about her secrets than she thought? Is Roger lying about who he is and what his motives really are? As Fern begins to fear for her life, she knows one thing for sure: Roger has no idea how cold and calculating she can be. He needs to watch out, because if she finds out he is trying to catch her in a lie, she will come for him. Nothing is going to destroy the perfect world she has built for herself.
The Doctor’s Widow is pure escapism. It is full of twists and drama that keep you fully engrossed from start to finish. It ended in such a way that I feel there is definitely more to come, and I can’t wait to delve back in. This is a quick and fun domestic thriller that shouldn’t be missed!
