Rating: 3/5 Stars
Alex Vogel has it all, a new job with a prestigious law firm, plenty of money and a supportive boyfriend. This is the premise for Erica Katz’s novel The Boys Club. Alex plunges into her new job with full vigor, however she quickly falls down the rabbit hole of long hours, non-stop partying and questionable business associates. Alex begins to question if it is worth it or not to be selected for the exclusive M & A department at the firm. Women are rarely selected for the exclusive group at the firm and she has to fight stereotypes in her climb up the corporate ladder. After a particularly disturbing incident Alex is shaken to her core and she must decide how far she is willing to go for success. It leaves her wondering how much she is ready to give up and who can she really trust?
I enjoyed reading this book. However I gave it 3 out of 5 stars because it was slow to start and seemed to rush it all in the end. I did find Alex’s character very relatable in today’s society. She is a woman in a man’s world trying to rise to the top without comprising her morals and earning her place by her merits. I was cheering for Alex throughout the book and commiserating with her when she made mistakes. I liked that the book didn’t end the way I thought it would. This novel is a great summer read.
