This debut by Nina Simon is the perfect mix of murder mystery and family bonding and I love it so much! The atmospheric details of the California slough put me directly on a kayak in the middle of a place I’ve never been but feel as though I’ve spent so much time. Jack, Beth, and Lana are powerhouses in their own right, each brimming with a different variety of strength and independence. When they put their minds together to figure out a murder, nothing can stand in their way. Not even the murderer.
These characters were so much fun! I loved watching them mend their relationships while figuring out life living under one roof. After Lana receives a devastating cancer diagnosis, she moves in with her daughter, Beth, and granddaughter, Jack. At first, their personalities clash but that quickly begins to change when Jack discovers a dead body on a kayak tour. Anxious to find the killer (and get the detectives to stop blaming Jack), Lana sets off on a discovery for the truth. If there’s anything Lana is great at, it’s reading people and digging up clues! There are so many suspects but only one true killer. And you’ll never guess who it is!
I was completely sucked into this book! I am definitely looking forward to anything Nina Simon writes in the future. This trio of strong female characters definitely isn’t one to miss!
