Romantic comedies have everything I look for when I need a small break from reading thrillers: witty banter, a fun story, and a quick read. When I saw the title of this book, I knew I had to add it to my reading list and I’m so glad I did! It definitely checks all the boxes and more! If you read a lot of thrillers like I do, this is the perfect book for when you’re in the mood for something lighter.
It all started with a precariously placed desk…
Not only is Phoebe in the middle of writing her dissertation to obtain her PhD, she must travel to Florida to get her childhood home ready to sell after the passing of her father. Thankfully, Phoebe is more educated than most on how to spot a murderer because the neighbor is giving off major serial killer vibes. Did I mention that Phoebe is writing her dissertation on True Crime as a genre and is completely obsessed with the subject? Sam, the sketchy neighbor, goes out during the day wearing khakis and a button-up (the horror!) but is definitely up to something nefarious at night. Phoebe is convinced she won’t let herself become another crime statistic but Sam may be guilty of something far worse than murder. He may just be the one to steal her heart.
I could not put this book down! I instantly felt a connection with Phoebe and her quirky personality. All of the characters are wonderfully written, creating a realistic and easy-to-love group of family and friends who surround Phoebe…whether she likes it or not! There are a few short spicy scenes but overall, they enhance the plot.
Underneath the crime-themed banter, there is a heartwarming layer of rekindled friendship, grief, and finally finding yourself – no matter what stage of life you’re in. I highly recommend this book for lovers of thrillers, true crime, and those who read romantic comedies all the time. This book is truly original and will leave you laughing, crying, and hoping for a follow up novel!
