What would you do if someone forcibly removed you from your life, drugged you, threatened your very existence, and then dropped you in the middle of an Escape Room game gone wrong? Would you be capable of fighting for your life? Could you kill someone if you had to?
Good Girls Don’t Die, by Christina Henry, tells the stories of Celia, Allie, and Maggie, all abducted and forced to participate in a misogynistic survivalist style game. Along the way these women step into their newly discovered power and devise a way to defend themselves against their oppressors. Henry relates their stories in separate vignettes that eventually connect into a very satisfying ending.
On the surface, Good Girls Don’t Die is a fast-paced mystery-thriller with its heroines fighting for their lives. The compelling subplots examine the male supremacist psyche and the value of feminine unity as the women fight for themselves and each other. If you enjoyed Peter Swanson’s Every Vow You Break, you will enjoy Good Girls Don’t Die, an action-packed thriller with a feminist twist.
