Dominion by Jean Kwok is a solid 5 star read that completely pulled me in from the very beginning. From the first few chapters, I was hooked and found myself not wanting to put the book down. The pacing is strong, the world building is immersive, and the story keeps you engaged the entire time. The writing style flows really well and makes it easy to get lost in the story, which I always look for in a fantasy read.
Many readers may compare this book to Fourth Wing, and while I can see the similarities, I do not fully think they are the same. Both stories share that exciting element of bonding with powerful creatures, in this case the Tygers, which adds such a compelling dynamic to the plot. However, Dominion stands on its own with a unique storyline, distinct character arcs, and its own emotional depth that sets it apart.
One of my favorite aspects of the book was how the story balanced character development with the action. The relationships between the characters felt natural and well built, which made the stakes feel even higher as the plot unfolded. I found myself really invested in what would happen to them, which made the emotional moments hit even harder. Just when I thought I had a sense of where things were going, the story took a turn I did not expect at all.
The twist near the end was absolutely incredible and elevated the entire reading experience for me. It was not just surprising, it was impactful and made me rethink everything that had happened leading up to that moment. Not to mention the epilogue completely catching me off guard. It added one more layer to the story that I truly did not see coming, and I loved how it wrapped everything up while still leaving a lasting impression.
Overall, Dominion is one of those books that stays with you even after you finish it. I am already excited to reread this one and cannot wait for the next book. If you loved Fourth Wing, you will really enjoy Dominion just as much as you enjoyed Fourth Wing. It delivers that same sense of excitement and connection while still offering something fresh and unforgettable.
