Want to discuss great books with like-minded friends in Ōtautahi Christchurch?
The concept is simple. We’re a global book club for likeminded women to discuss great books! All members of the book club read the same book over the same period; members then meet up in their respective cities at the end of each month to discuss the book and exchange views.
Grab your seat! What we are reading in September: Smart Biz by Sara Novic
True biz? The students at the River Valley School for the Deaf just want to hook up, pass their history finals, and have politicians, doctors, and their parents stop telling them what to do with their bodies. This revelatory novel plunges readers into the halls of a residential school for the deaf, where they’ll meet Charlie, a rebellious transfer student who’s never met another deaf person before; Austin, the school’s golden boy, whose world is rocked when his baby sister is born hearing; and February, the headmistress, who is fighting to keep her school open and her marriage intact, but might not be able to do both. As a series of crises both personal and political threaten to unravel each of them, Charlie, Austin, and February find their lives inextricable from one another’s—and changed forever.
This is a story of sign language and lip-reading, disability and civil rights, isolation and injustice, first love and loss, and, above all, great persistence, daring, and joy. Absorbing and assured, idiosyncratic and relatable, this is an unforgettable journey into the Deaf community and a universal celebration of human connection.

Before I join, I need to know when and where meetings are held, as I use a wheel chair
I don’t know where the May event will be but once I do I’ll reach out and let you know.
Hi, I’m also interested to attend this, and would like the details of when and where it meets
Hello, I’m interested in coming along to a bookclub night and seeing if it’s for me. Could you please email through the details for August so I can read the book and come along? Thanks heaps
Do many attend the Chch group session and what age range is it usually?
Hi Hannah, so far there are 6 people signed up for the January meeting. The age range typically ranges around 25-45 years old.
I would be interested to know the same as Hannah! I’m new in town and looking for a group to join so would be great to know a bit more. Thanks!
Thanks so much. Not sure I’ll make the January one but will start in Feb 🙂
Hi All, are there any other groups meeting on a Thursday or Friday evening? If so, I’d love to join. Thanks!
This is cool, how does it work? we just grab a copy and turn up at the meeting? I’m probably too late for this one sadly as all the library copies are loaned out but keen to come to the next one for sure 🙂
I would love to join this group!
Sadly I think it’s too late for May, but can I join the June one? And if so, do I just grab the book, read it and then go to the meet up? Or is there a bigger process?
Hi Ashleigh! To register for the meeting you can click the event under “Upcoming Bookclubs”. June’s event should be posted here soon to register!
Hi Amanda I found you guys on meetup. I’d like to join too but need to know where you meet as I use a wheelchair
Hi Rachel! I contacted the restaurant for the May meeting and unfortunately they are not wheelchair accessible. I will message your host to let her know a venue with wheelchair accessibility would be appreciated going forward.
