5-stars
Canary Girls by Jennifer Chiaverini is the perfect novel for women. It leads readers on a journey back in time to World War I. The women characters come from wide range of backgrounds and yet they come together fighting for their nation. They are needed to build the weapons the men need to fight the war. These women are given depth into the lives of the women during this time period. Each one shows what difficulties and sacrifices women suffered with daily. Women were always forbidden to do men’s jobs. But when war breaks out and men are sent away, the nation calls for extra help. The women step up without a fight. They do men’s work despite the dangers. Loss, grief, friendship, love, and courage is explored throughout this read.
Jennifer Chiaverini brings to life a portable time machine. I felt as though I were there watching and listening to these strong independent women. This writer captures the era perfectly. I can always count on her to bring me tales that send me on an incredible yet unforgettable journeys. The dangers and conflicts were real. It is both a heartbreaking and entertaining read. It showed how people everywhere can step up and do the right thing when needed. No more barriers and bickering. Teamwork, united as a nation, women and others do their right to help fight the war. I highly recommend this novel to fans of Christina Baker Kline and Annie Lyons.
