Wow! This book surprised me. At first, I thought it was going to be a fantasy novel (which I don’t read a lot of), but it turns out to be a book about romance, sacrifice and learning about the difference’s others have from ourselves. At the same time – It also is quite funny. I was intrigued with both main characters Astaroth and Calladia, I found they both were strong willed characters with a strange enjoyment for confrontation. Astaroth is a demon who is banished from the demon plain and loses his memory. Prior to losing his memory, Astaroth enjoyed bartering and being the best at collecting souls. Calladia is a human witch who is rough around the edges and feels a good brawl to be energizing especially if she is fighting for the greater good. They come together when Calladia finds Astaroth in an alley and feels sorry for him. She decides to help him with his quest of recovering his memory and to find out why he was banished. They are sworn enemies who, as they work together, find themselves seeing each other in a different light. Their quick wit and banter had me laughing out loud. The other characters in the book, from werewolves to fairies, all have their moments that really bring a special bond between everyone and add an essence to the story to bring it together.
The story is set on earth in a town called Glimmer Falls. Astaroth and Calladia find themselves going into the woods looking for a powerful witch to help them. There they discover new towns, one of which has a hotel where the rooms are in a tree. I kind of wish this could be true – how exciting that would be. Along with new and old friends they learn about how lives don’t necessarily have to be separated because of the differences they have.
I would recommend anyone who likes romance in their reading life along with those who are interested in fantasy to pick up this book. You won’t be disappointed.
