I am a huge fan of psychological thrillers, so the premise of A Beautiful Lie drew me in immediately—a professional home organizer with a crazy, obsessive side was right up my alley.
Emily Lowell is a professional home organizer, but she is also a psychopath. She is completely obsessed with purging the clutter from people’s lives. When she is hired to organize Cap’s workspace, she immediately becomes enamoured with her. Emily is incredibly skilled at manipulating people and situations, so it isn’t long before she ingratiates herself into Cap’s life. She even manages to get herself invited to Cap’s lavish family estate for a month of summer in the sun.
The story really unfolds from there. Cap comes from a very wealthy family, and her estate sounds like something out of a dream. She possesses everything that Emily has always wanted for herself: the family, the popularity, and the friends. Emily wants it all and will do absolutely anything to get it. As her obsession escalates, she methodically removes anyone or anything that threatens to come between her and her vision for the future.
Emily is such an unhinged character. While she isn’t necessarily likeable, it is impossible not to be fascinated by her madness and left wondering what she might do next. The story comes to an end with a perfect and horrific twist that left me completely speechless. Emily is truly one of those diabolical characters who is terrifying yet ultimately fascinating.
A Beautiful Lie reminded me a lot of the You series; it delivers those exact same psychopathic vibes. It is a fascinating look into a demented mind, and I absolutely loved it.
