“The Fix” by Mia Sheridan was a good mix of suspense and romance. This story follows a woman (Cami) who is part of the popular crowd in high school. She is a cheerleader, has lots of friends, and has the most popular boyfriend in school. But she never truly connects with anyone on a personal level. The people that she surrounds herself with are all superficial. Until she meets Rex. He is the shy guy always flying below the radar to not attract any unwanted attention. Cami and Rex cross paths at a party where she immediately has a personal connection after a few minutes of conversation. When Cami returns home that night after the party, her world is shattered. Her home has been burglarized. A tragedy that results in devastating loss.
Years later, we meet an older healed Cami. Until she receives a call for a “do-over”. She anonymously gets sent a video on the dark web of a boy who has been kidnapped and only has so much time to save him. She cannot contact the police or the video will disappear. Now on a desperate search to save the boy, she gets unexpected help from an old friend. Cami can’t help but wonder are the crimes of her past connected to these crimes of the present? And did she make the right choices along the path to finding out the truth?
This story is intense, captivating, and heartfelt. This book is mostly a psychological thriller with hints of romance. Please check the trigger warnings as this contains sexual assault, rape, murder, graphic violence, child abduction, child trafficking, and foster care system failure. Overall, I would give this book 4 out of 5 stars. Usually, I can predict the ending of a book, but I did not expect this ending.
