The Coroner by Jennifer Graeser Dornbush (Review by Lara Ferguson)
1 min read
What do you do when your father has a health scare? You go take care of him of course. But what if he is also the county coroner and you just happen to be a doctor and there is a murder to be solved– so begins this wonderful book. Our heroine is an intelligent and educated woman, settled in her city life, with a great career and a great fiancé…or so she thinks.
Enter her dad who needs her, home town full of memories and people, mix in a mystery just begging to be solved and we are off on an adventure of intrigue and self-discovery that keeps you hanging and hoping for a happy ending.
This novel is Nancy Drew meets Kay Scarpetta. A kinder, gentler mystery/medical adventure that delves into familiar relationships both family and professional and exposes all their complexity and contradiction in a way that we all can relate.
Perfect for a weekend read, I found Coroner well worth my attention.
Just finished the 1st book, where I had to gloss over a subtle plot hole, and immediately started the 2nd book where I have noticed a MASSIVE plot hole! In book 1, there are 2 or 3 references to a ‘sister, Anna’. But these are always a memory of Emily’s. Absolutely no explanation is given for what she is not at her father’s side or at this funeral. Also, no information is given to what happened to her.
Now, book 2 opens with Emily’s father’s will being read and Emily is completely stunned to hear that someone called ‘Anna Johnson’ has inherited some of his things. She seems completely unaware that she has a half-sister! She also doesn’t mention her ‘sister Anna’ in the scene. She even says ‘why didn’t mom or dad ever mention Anna?’ Wtf?!
Talk about a massively confusing plot hole! How did none of the editors /proofreaders pick up on this glaring continuity error?!

The worst ending to any book I’ve ever read.
