I’ll be honest: I picked this one up expecting a breezy summer romance, the kind you read in two sittings with your feet up and nowhere to be. What I got instead was something I didn’t see coming and genuinely couldn’t put down.
The Romance Revival opens on Emery Finch, a driven research scientist who, three years earlier, did something wildly out of character: she married Luca, an impossibly charming landscaper she met in Las Vegas. The problem is that the life she has built since then has slowly crowded him out. Missed dinners, forgotten anniversaries, promises of “later.” When a tragic accident takes Luca from her, Emery does the only thing she knows how to do: she uses her classified research to bring him back. It works. And then she has to reckon with the fact that the man she loves has no memory of her at all.
What makes this book so quietly devastating is that it’s not just a love story about two people falling for each other. It’s about what happens when someone gets a second chance to show up in the ways that matter. Luca and Emery’s chemistry leaps off the page, and watching them rediscover each other felt genuinely tender and hopeful. Christina Lauren has always been brilliant at making you root for people, and this is no exception.
The one thing that surprised me was how much the book leans into its sci-fi premise. There’s a thriller-ish quality to the back half that I wasn’t expecting, and if you’re someone who reads romance strictly for the relationship dynamics, that shift might catch you off guard. For readers who love a little genre-blending, though, it’s genuinely thrilling.
This is one for your beach bag this summer, and I think it’s going to spark some really wonderful conversations about second chances, and what it actually means to choose someone every day.
