Book review

As a thriller junkie, I never really thought I could appreciate a novel with such an artful display of character depth as this book. As someone who has always found astronomy fascinating, I admittingly jumped at the title alone. ‘We Are Made of Stars’ follows three couples along with a mother/daughter on a week long retreat at the Vis ta Vie inn, which means “Live Your Life”. The novel opens with the inn owners reflecting on the week to come as they face the looming likelihood of closing the doors to future guests. We are introduced to Jean-Paul, one of the inn’s owners, as he meticulously plans the menu (major points here for foodies) and prepares for the extraordinary week ahead. As the story unfolds, we are introduced to each character’s life hurdles that become more illuminated as their stay continues. ‘We Are Made of Stars’ threads comparisons of human nature to the universe as the onion of each story is peeled. The words were intricately woven with highly impactful analogies to help understand the depths of each character’s experiences, emotions and thoughts. While this was highly impressive for much of the book, I will admit I did reach a point where I craved a more accelerated plotline. By the point I was stuck in this place, the stories of each began to unravel. I couldn’t get enough of the shocking revelations that connected the characters in unexpected ways. With such a foundation that was laid with each, I was completely vested to see if they’d emerge from the darkness and find the light they were looking for. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in any fiction. The story is relatable to anyone that is progressing through their own challenges in life. Bonus points if you share a passion for the stars! I absolutely plan to explore other titles by this author.
