The Women on Platform Two, Laura Anthony (Review by: Sophie Mallaro)

The Women on Platform Two is an incredible story of female strength, friendship and resilience. The book weaves together the stories of two women who meet on a train: Saoirse, a modern woman unsure if she wants children and Maura, an older woman who came of age in the 1960s, before Irish Women had the right to contraception. We also hear a third perspective throughout the novel: Maura’s late best friend Bernie. Though the book focuses largely on the historic story line, the addition of Saoirse adds an additional layer of impact to the actions of Maura and Bernie. Laura Anthony had me hooked from the start and the pacing kept me glued throughout. Laura Anthony does a remarkable job of creating characters with depth. All of the women depicted have rich and complex lives, and deep friendships. I laughed and I cried along with the characters, cheering on their achievements and mourning their losses. Though a great read, this is a very tough read. The book includes discussion of sexual assault, pregnancy loss, domestic violence, and other heavy topics involved with women’s rights. Avoid it if you are looking for a lighter read! I rarely give a book five stars but this book truly deserves it. It is an absolute must-read for lovers of historical fiction!
