The Missing Pages, Alyson Richman (Review by Laurie McKenzie)

“The Missing Pages” by Alyson Richman, is historical fiction with a touch of mystery and a touch of romance. This is a story of Harry Elkins Widener; it’s a tale of the love of books and the love of family. Well-researched facts blended with fiction bring Harry’s story to life. With the unique characterization of Harry’s ghost, the reader learns Harry’s story as they take a step into his world. Harry’s ghost brings us back to 1912 when Harry, a graduate from Harvard University and a passionate book collector, boards the Titanic after a book-buying adventure in London. In 1992 Violet Hutchins, a student at Harvard University and a page at the Widener Library, feels that Harry is trying to communicate with her. The dual storylines are well done and the unique ghost in the library nicely blends the events as we travel from the fateful Titanic crossing to the present. As a reader who loves to learn about historical events, I was more drawn to the early 1900s period. However, the modern-day storyline was an enjoyable and creative way to bring the past to life. Without giving too much away, I was swooning over Harry’s book collection and book-buying adventures! I’ve read many novels based on the Titanic, yet “The Missing Pages” was full of new-to -me information. A well-done historical novel tends to give me the spark to do my own research on the topic. This book did not disappoint! The author, Alyson Richman, has created a rich story that will have the reader turning the pages, eager to learn more. I highly recommend this novel for those who love reading historical fiction, books about books, and books about libraries. I look forward to seeing future novels from this author. Truly, this was a pleasure to read!
