When their older brother, and heir to the family estate decides to marry, his fiancé has her sites set on living in the house twin sisters Augusta and Julia have occupied for years, they make the bold decision to buy their own home. Thus begins the adventures of Lady Augusta Colebrook and her sister, Julia. Set in London, 1812, these sisters are single women, living on their own in a time when that was unheard of. This time period was an extremely misogynistic time in London. They are determined to live their lives on their own terms and by their own rules, in spite of the social constructs of 1812 London society. After the unmarried twin sisters use their ability as “spinsters” to fly under the radar in London society and rescue a woman from her abusive husband, they find themselves being looked to for assistance in helping other women in need. The sisters are determined to help and protect other women who find themselves in distress. In addition to helping other women, the sisters find ways to help themselves. Lady Augusta meets and falls for the mysterious Lord Evan, while her sister deals with her own loss and health issues. I really enjoyed reading this book. The women were interesting, bold and modern for the time the book was set. I hope the author creates more books for these extraordinary characters. More adventures of THE BENEVOLENT SOCIETY OF ILL-MANNERED LADIES.
