Sari not Sari by by Sonya Singh (Review by Karina Kaushal)

For once a book about a North American woman that is curious about her Indian roots and isn’t running away from them! That’s right, we don’t just walk around balancing the weight of our cultural obligations. There are so many beautiful traditions and meaningful celebrations to learn about. Sari, Not Sari, had me at the title. You can’t deny the clever play on words. Then, the story didn’t disappoint. This is a book about a woman named Manny Dogra who runs a company that helps people get out of relationships. I love this concept for so many reasons. It broke the stereotype of Indians always trying to match people up. This Indian was helping to break people up. Ha! Manny is very much assimilated into North American culture and her upbringing is removed from her Indian roots. When she takes on a client that needs her help with a unique idea – a temporary breakup – she makes a deal that sends her on a quest to discover her heritage. This was a beautiful love story with just the right amount of humour and wit. Go for it!
