Based on the premise, I anticipated a more intimate narrative, something that would feel like reading a personal journal or being fully immersed in the protagonist’s life. Instead, the writing style created a bit more distance between me and the characters. Rather than experiencing events alongside them, I often felt like an observer watching the story unfold. Because of that, I found it difficult to develop the emotional connection I had been hoping for.
One of the book’s standout strengths was its humor. Castellano has a sharp, enjoyable wit, and several moments genuinely made me laugh. Those lighter scenes added personality and charm to the story and kept me engaged throughout the novel.
Although I was hoping for a stronger emotional payoff by the end, the story never fully clicked with me in the way I expected. I kept waiting for a moment that would bring everything together and elevate my experience, but ultimately I finished the book wanting a little more from the journey.
That said, this simply may have been a case of the book not being the right match for my reading tastes. I can see how readers who connect with the narrative style and sense of humor could have a very different experience. I genuinely wanted to love this one, which is perhaps why I came away feeling somewhat disappointed.
