Pitcher Perfect, Tessa Bailey (Review by Shantell Krystal)

Pitcher Perfect is a compelling summer romance novel that brings together two athletes from different worlds: Skylar, a dedicated pitcher, and Robbie, a charismatic hockey player. These two could not be further apart when it comes to things in common except sports, particularly their own sports. At first site Robbie knows that Skylar is the girl for him. However, when he discovers she is in love with her brother’s best friend his hopes are dashed. Then he finds out about Skylar’s family hosting a annual competition and her partner has bailed out on her. It takes place in Rhode Island where Skylar’s family own a home, Robbie agrees to help her win the cup and to help her get her brothers best friend up to speed with wanting to date her. The characters were genuinely likable, and I found myself routing for Robbie throughout the story. His portrayal feels authentic for a hockey player, especially a young, talented one. Having grown up watching high school hockey, I can attest that dating a hockey player was every girl’s dream, though these players often lived up to their reputation when it came to relationships. Skylar’s family dynamic adds depth to the story. The family is intensely competitive, but Skylar feels like an outsider because she didn’t attend the same prestigious school as her parents and brother. Robbie is amazing in helping to change things and Skylar is very touched with this gesture, that Skylar starts to rethink her love for her brother’s friend. The novel explores several meaningful themes, particularly those of escape and identity. Robbie is determined to prove he’s evolved beyond one-night stands and he is looking for a real relationship with Skylar. Meanwhile, Skylar struggles to find her place within her family’s dynamic while also empowering herself to handle matters of the heart in the bedroom. It’s worth noting that the book contains more explicit sexual content than typical romantic comedies. The themes of belonging and self-discovery resonate throughout the story, making Pitcher Perfect more than just a simple sports romance. It’s a thoughtful exploration of how two people can help each other find their true selves while navigating the complexities of family, competition, and love.
