Extracurricular, Rachel Lynn Solomon (Review by Lindsey Dennis)

I was truly excited to begin this book. Since I had never read a story centered around a teacher–student dynamic before, I was eager to see how the author would approach it. Although the relationship took its time to develop, I appreciated the slow burn and the anticipation it created. Even though the characters didn’t cross paths often in the first seventy‑five pages, once they finally began interacting, their connection immediately pulled me in. One of the aspects I loved most was how openly the characters shared their personal trauma and struggles. Their willingness to be vulnerable with each other made their relationship feel sincere and meaningful. Even though their bond deepened quickly, it felt natural for these two characters. I especially enjoyed how each of them felt somewhat out of place in their own world yet completely understood and accepted by the other. Relationships like that always leave a lasting impression on me. While some of the conflict didn’t land as strongly for me, I still appreciated the emotional stakes the author tried to build. And although the ending moved quickly to tie up several side storylines, I admired the ambition behind weaving so many elements together. Despite a few moments that felt rushed, the heart of the story — their relationship — remained compelling throughout. Overall, I genuinely enjoyed the author’s writing style. Their voice, pacing, and emotional depth kept me engaged, and I’m looking forward to exploring more of their work in the future.
