Dedicated: What We Kept to Ourselves by Nancy Jooyoun Kim

This was an easy book to pick up given that we read Nancy’s last book The Last Story of Mina Lee, which was met with such love and appreciation in book clubs around the world. I was excited to see where Nancy went next – and I wasn’t disappointed. The book cover actually reminds me of This is How it Always Is by Laurie Frankel but the two books couldn’t be more different. Dual time line – which we all know is a sure fire winner – but it’s nice because the timelines aren’t far apart: 1972 and then 17 years later in 1999. We meet Sunny Kim in 1999 and she’s a pregnant immigrant from Korea who is struggling with this new move to America. Lonely and alone, she meets RJ – who I don’t want to tell you much about, but fast forward to 1999 and Sunny has been missing for a year when RJ shows up in the Kim’s backyard with a notebook with Sunny’s name on it. Okay, I may have already given too much away. But who is RJ and how does he play into Sunny’s story? Where has Sunny disappeared to? It’s a ride you won’t want to get off. Buy the book!
