Book review

Sharon Virts continues her meticulous exploration of early American history in Bargains of Fate, the highly anticipated second installment of her Fields of Honor saga. Picking up in the aftermath of the tragic Mason-McCarty duel of 1819, the novel follows brilliant young lawyer Jack McCarty and his new wife, Lucinda Lee, as they attempt to build a charmed life amid the political and social cutthroats of the American Regency era.

Virts’ greatest strength lies in her ability to make history breathe. The setting is deeply immersive, capturing early Virginia society—from the polished veneer of grand estates to the chaotic internal mechanisms of the legal and political systems—with stunning clarity. Jack McCarty is a wonderfully complex protagonist; haunted by the scars of his past, his struggle to balance personal ambition with moral integrity feels entirely genuine. When Lucinda’s sister, Fanny, enters the household and begins spinning a web of domestic turmoil, the emotional tension between the characters becomes completely addictive. It is a narrative rich with romance, courtroom drama, and high-stakes scandal.

However, the book might not be a seamless fit for every reader. Because Virts commits so heavily to historical accuracy, the narrative occasionally detours into the granular mechanics of early 19th-century legal and political frameworks. For readers who prefer fast-paced, plot-driven historical fiction, these dense world-building segments might slow down the pacing. Additionally, while the book can technically be read as a standalone, the emotional weight of Jack’s trauma heavily relies on the events of the first book, Masque of Honor. Newcomers may occasionally feel like they are playing catch-up with the character motivations.

Overall, Bargains of Fate is a triumph of historical fiction. Virts gracefully blends meticulous research with a deeply human story about family reckoning, making it an excellent recommendation for any patient reader who loves to truly inhabit a past era.
