* trigger warnings for infertility, multiple miscarriages, and abortion*
It’s One of Us is a multi-layered story revolving around the lives of Olivia and Park Bender. Not only is this irresistible thriller full of lies and shocking revelations, the underbelly is a look inside the hopes, fears, and overall thoughts of a couple dealing with infertility. Already on edge from another failed IVF attempt, the last thing Olivia needs is the police knocking on her door. The detectives have determined the killer of the woman found at the bottom of the lake happens to be Park’s son. At first, this is a relief because Olivia knows all too well that Park has no children. Except…he’s been keeping a secret. In college, Park donated sperm and signed an agreement to give up all rights to information about any children that may have come from it. It’s a very real possibility he has a child old enough to commit this crime. Honestly, he could have a few. Olivia is devastated by the news but does she really have the right to be upset with him while holding secrets of her own?
Let me tell you, this book is one heck of a ride! The twists just kept coming and it was very hard for me to put it down. The chapters are uniquely titled by the point of view of different characters. For example, Olivia’s chapters are titled “The Wife” and Park’s chapters “The Husband”. I found this to be very helpful to keep all the characters identified and straight in my mind. I also loved being able to read inner monologue from more than one individual.
Set in Nashville where she lives, Ellison did a wonderful job describing the neighborhoods surrounding the bustling city. The writing is impeccable, the story pulls you in from page one, and the ending will leave your jaw on the floor. If you’re a fan of fast-paced thrillers with short chapters and intriguing characters, this is definitely one to add to your list!
