What a fun an inventive way of storytelling! A young adult magical realism set on a remote island, where a classic locked-room whodunnit mystery gets a modern and interactive twist. There are actual puzzles for readers to solve along the way, and choose your story chapters too – although to be honest, I skipped most of them and was still able to follow along and enjoyed the story. The pacing is quick, the concept unique, and the mystery engaging enough to keep me hooked the whole time. I finished the whole book in a week which is considered very quick for me. I especially adored the protagonist, a kind-hearted and nerdy genius whose growth throughout the book was a joy to follow along.
While I personally do not enjoy the casual tone and somewhat predictable plot, they did not take away from the overall enjoyment. I imagine my teenage self would have absolutely devoured this book, which makes it an easy recommendation for young adult readers, especially the ones who enjoy solving puzzles.
