Have you ever read a book that at face value seemed like a fun, unique story, but then left you contemplating life after? In What World, by Bridget Morrissey, did exactly that for me! Marlowe and Priscilla are school rivals in their drama department with a budding attraction for each other. Fast forward over 10 years, and their silent rivalry still exists, with Priscilla being a famous actor and Marlowe teaching at the same school they attended. When their old drama teacher goes missing, they unexpectedly and begrudgingly end up on an adventure together. Turns out the memory machine they thought was fake can actually transport them to alternate dimensions, showing various realities of their life playing out.
This book was so whimsical and really highlighted the insecurities and fears of both FMCs when confronted with their alternate versions in the different worlds. It was a journey of growth and realizations but also ended with a deep sense of peace and appreciation. Both ladies have the tension and history that make this whole story hilarious and heartfelt. The book is dual pov and as the reader, you get a deeper look into their thought process and experience. It made me stop and think about what versions of myself could exist, and about what directions my life could have taken without the influence of certain people around me. Also, shout out to the author, Morrissey, for the amount of millennial culture references I had completely forgotten from my childhood.
Overall, this book made me feel all the emotions and was a completely new take on a romance novel. It showed the growth Marlowe and Priscilla each need from past traumas to be able to come together healthily, and it is the definition of a slow burn. I highly recommend this book, especially to all the theater lovers!
