Akwaeke Emezi reimagines biblical lore in this imaginative mythological romance where the inhabitants of Heaven and Hell are commensurate beings, imperfect and vulnerable, serving different masters with opposing agendas. This concept peels away the veneer of superiority, thereby balancing both sides, while Helel’s princes and God’s angels are defined by their actions and loyalty. I loved this original premise.
Gailee Kincaid always knew she was different. Raised on earth, by a clan of woman warriors, in a mythical place in the Black South, called Salvation. The matriarchs protect Galilee throughout her childhood while shrouding her identity. After leaving the family homestead, Galilee meets a devastatingly gorgeous man who turns out to be Lucifer Helel himself. Instead of fearing him, Galilee finds Lucifer irresistible, and a searing romance ensues. When Galilee’s family come to rescue her from Lucifer’s sensual clutches, they recognize Galilee’s need to transform into her magical powers. Once the truth is revealed, Galilee must decide between family loyalty and the demands of her heart.
This genre-defying novel was part magic and fantasy, transporting readers to a contemporary, supernatural stage that explores identity, sacrifice, forgiveness, freedom and belonging. The multifaceted characters were vivid and emotional. The plot undulated with opportunities for key individuals to experience metamorphoses of their viewpoints, allowing further character development. The extra spicy romance scenes were a delicious addition of icing to an already perfect cake! If you’re looking for a paranormal romance that’s giving mortal and divine family drama with a supernatural twist, Son of the Morning is for you!
