Everyone needs a safe space. Jesse Pérez is just beginning to feel like his life is finding its “sweet spot.” Still grieving the recent loss of his husband, he is just starting to find a new rhythm with their 10-year-old autistic son and the transition to single parent and breadwinner. When his teenaged niece, the daughter of his estranged evangelical sister from Texas, unexpectedly appears on his doorstep, alone and newly pregnant, he is forced to navigate a myriad of issues, both personal and legal, that threaten to upend his quiet, predictable life and force him to reconsider what makes a family.
