Book review

It will forever amaze me how dramatically writing style affects reading pace. The last book I reviewed was under 300 pages, yet it took me three weeks to finish because the prose felt choppy and I constantly had to reread sections to make sense of the way thoughts were arranged. Yesterday, I picked up this book while relaxing outside with my family — and two hours later they were dragging me away because I was already 150 pages in with no sign of slowing down.

Maggie Gates has a gift for pulling you straight into the story, making you feel as though you’re experiencing every moment alongside the characters. I was fully prepared for a long, drawn‑out slow burn, but instead the connection between the leads sparked immediately. It was refreshing to read characters who felt genuinely drawn to one another without being overly restrained or emotionally distant. Hayes is confident, warm, and protectively attentive, while Catherine is witty, intelligent, and the perfect blend of fierce and gentle. The supporting cast is equally charming, adding depth without ever distracting from the main storyline — and Gates sets the stage beautifully for Hallie and Mason’s upcoming story. I’m ready for it.

For most of the book, I was convinced this would be a five‑star read. My only critique is that certain moments became predictable and repetitive. During nearly every intimate scene, Hayes would reassure Catherine with the same phrase, and their dynamic in those moments followed a familiar pattern. It’s a minor note, but with such strong writing elsewhere, I found myself wishing for a bit more variety to match the richness of the rest of the story.

Still, Hayes and Catherine were HOT together, the pacing is addictive, and Maggie Gates’ storytelling is wonderfully immersive. This was an incredibly enjoyable read — fast, engaging, and full of heart.
