Nothing makes me happier than seeing a woman take control of her own life, fiction or otherwise. In The Good Luck Charm by Helena Hunting, Lilah is getting out of a six-year marriage and taking prep classes to be accepted into University of Minnesota’s nursing program.
Three cheers for Lilah—
Ethan’s been traded to Minnesota’s NHL team and was Lilah’s first love until he broke up with her eight years ago via telephone call. Of course, they can’t—won’t stay away from each other for long. As Ethan tries to make amends, you wait impatiently for Lilah to submit to the inevitable.
When Lilah and Ethan are together it’s cute and sexy and fun until it’s too cute and sexy and fun. What I mean is: Ethan’s NHL career has been shaky never stable until he got traded to Minnesota and rekindled his relationship with Lilah. He needs constant contact and communication before, during and after games to make him believe he’ll be the best player and boyfriend. It’s the thought that counts—counted.
Lilah’s grades, sleep and time are all affected in the life she started to achieve before Ethan moved back and she knows it. She’s constantly talking herself into what she needs to do to get hold of her personal life again. Talk is cheap, Lilah.
When the media attention of being an NHL girlfriend and Ethan’s superstitions become overwhelming, Lilah finally asks for space from Ethan. He unwillingly obliges in hopes she will find herself again and come back to him. Now, that’s a good boyfriend.
Can Lilah and Ethan be in love and live their lives together?
