Sister Dear by Mary Hannah McKinnon is a psychological thriller being released May 26,2020. The book opens when Eleanor Hardwicke’s father dies. Shortly before his death her world is shaken when she finds out that the man that has always been on her side and claimed to be her father is not her biological father. Eleanor was a product of an affair and her father is still out there. Eleanor searches out her father who doesn’t welcome her. She also discovers that she has a half-sister Victoria. Victoria, has, according to Eleanor, the perfect life, family, husband, and home. When Eleanor secretly become best friends with Victoria things seem to be going well. Until they weren’t…
I enjoyed Sister Dear. While it is a thriller, it took off slowly and more of a romance style book. As you continue through out the story you begin to get hints of potential issues with Eleanor. Yet, at the same time you sympathize with Eleanor and she grows on you. You wonder if she will really snap like the book’s description makes it sound. The most shocking part of the book was the end. I don’t think even the most seasoned thriller reader would realize how it ends. I love the unique ending, it really threw me for a loop and left me speechless. However, I felt that the ending was really open ended leaving me unsure of how I really felt about it and leaving me somewhat wanting more closure or justice. I am wondering if there is a second book to follow or if McKinnon meant to leave it so open. Overall, I would recommend this book to a thriller reader. I give it a 4.5 out of 5. I’d love to read some additional books from this author, as I enjoyed her style.
