How many times have you been asked, “Are you more of a Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha or a Miranda?” How many times have you or have one of your friends discussed your lives and suddenly found yourselves comparing it to an episode of “Sex and the City?”
It’s been exactly twenty years since the popular HBO series “Sex and the City” first premiered and yet many of us still find ourselves connected to the series.
“Sex and the City and Us” by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong is the ultimate guide to all things “Sex and the City.” Armstrong discusses everything in her book from how Candace Bushnell’s writing inspired the series to how the series challenged our views on sex, friendship, marriage, parenting and adulthood.
Reading this book was like traveling back in time to the 90’s/2000’s when names like Darren Starr (writer on 90210) and fashion trends (like the name necklace Carrie wore) were so popular. This book also examines popular lines, touching scenes and favorite New York City moments from the show. It is the perfect mix of discussing serious issues at the time (like the 9/11 bombings and how it impacted the show) to covering fun celebrity gossip (do Sarah Jessica Parker and Kim Cattrall really hate one another?)
This book brought up so much nostalgia for me and I am sure it will do the same for you. I wanted to know absolutely everything related to “Sex and the City” and it made me feel part of such a strong community of people who loved the show.
Was it well written? Yes. Was it a little too wordy and full of too much history at times? Yes. Who knows if there will be another Sex and the City movie. However, in the meantime, you can fill that “Sex and the City” void with “Sex and the City and Us” by Jennifer Keishin Armstrong. After that, you can then tell me if you are a Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha, or Miranda.
