Rating: 3/5*
Jess Kidd proved that she has an outstanding imagination in Mr. Flood’s Last Resort. It has been quite some time since I have read a book that is as unique as this one is. That being said, there were a lot of random and unnecessary extras that really distracted me from the plot of the book. The worst part about it, was these extra additions were never explained to the reader. For example, there were a large number of saints that only Maud, the main character, could see. Kidd did not spend any time explaining why there were saints and the saints did not contribute to the storyline at all.
The mystery of the book does pull the reader in, slowly and then all at once. Kidd does a wonderful job pacing the reading and keeping their interest. It is unfortunate that the ending leaves many loose threads and questions for the reader. If Kidd focused more on one or two plot lines only, I feel that she would have made this book a wonderful one, instead of the mediocre one that it currently is.
