Trigger warning: This book encompasses the spirit of the #MeToo movement, highlighting its best qualities but also the reason for the movement in the first place…sexual assault.
I enjoy reading books with tough topics at their core. Although fictitious, they generally provide a positive outcome for the victims which, sadly, isn’t always the case in real life. They foster hope and maybe even the courage for a reader who is also a victim to confidently seek help.
Kelly McCann is the embodiment of a strong female main character. She is the most sought after defense attorney for high-profile clients looking to be acquitted of sexual assault charges. She always delivers a win. She even delivered a huge win on the night she, herself, was sexually assaulted. She was put in a position where, if she told the truth of what happened, she would be disbarred and lose the life she has worked so hard to build. But should she live the rest of her life knowing what was done to her, living with the aftermath, and not able to do anything about it? No. Kelly McCann wins. That’s what she does best. Together with her abuser’s other victims, they come up with a plan to make him pay for what he’d done to them and ensure he can never add another woman to his list of victims.
There are many characters in this book and there are quite a few situations for you to wonder “whodunnit?” The pace is fast and I read this one quickly! Although the subject matter is heavy, it was so hard to put down! There is a second storyline involving many of the same characters that deviates from the assault narrative but they tie together near the end. I loved all the twists and turns and never really knew at whom to point the finger (which I love!)
