A Family Affair is a heartfelt story of a family who must pick up the pieces and rebuild when family patriarch Chad passes away unexpectedly.
For Chad’s wife Anna, his untimely passing causes her to reflect on her own life and what’s next for her. Adding to the weight on her mind and heart is how she must now look out for their grown-up children Jessie, Mike and Bess. Even more puzzling is who was the mysterious pregnant woman at his funeral?
Jessie idolized her father while maintaining her successful career as a doctor, but the events that have transpired have caused her to look deeper at the problems within her personal life. Can she adjust her way of thinking before the next big surprise rocks her world?
Mike has been in a long-term relationship with his girlfriend with big plans for their future. However, the passing of his father rocks him to his core, causing him to react, and spiral downward. Will this mysterious woman cause him to do an about-face?
Bess is the baby of the family, a high-functioning autistic law student, but grief and the pressures of school begin to affect her, causing worry for her boyfriend and her family.
While Chad may have passed away, the family remains and must take a deeper look at themselves and each other. Amy, the pregnant woman from the funeral, introduces herself to Anna and explains who she was to Chad. Anna’s world begins to spin as she reflects on her marriage to Chad, and the state of their marriage.
Robyn Carr does a wonderful job bringing this family’s grief to life and what it means to do that as a family with surprises at every turn. Capturing the heart of the matter and each character, Robyn draws in and captivates the reader. Despite the heavy theme, A Family Affair is a light-hearted must-read that calls readers to reflect on what happiness means for yourself and with your loved ones.
